WooCommerce

What is WooCommerce?

On its own website, WooCommerce advertises itself as:

The eCommerce platform for WordPress Start selling today with the world’s most customizable eCommerce platform.

WooCommerce is a plugin for WordPress that allows you to sell your products online. It will allow you to setup an online store, take payments and manage your stock all in one place.

WooCommerce is our preferred platform when we’re developing ecommerce websites—for lots of reasons—but here’s some of the main ones.

Why we use WooCommerce for ecommerce websites

It’s flexible

Unlike hosted solutions like Shopify, WooCommerce allows you to edit anything you’d like to. We’ve designed and built things like a beer subscription service, a telephone answering service, and built an ecommerce store for a high-end fashion retailer who wanted to move online.

Each one of these projects required us to design and build different tools. With WooCommerce we had the flexibility to be able to change things that we needed to easily.

It’s very popular

WordPress is used by nearly a third of the internet, and WooCommerce sits on top of that. WooCommerce is used by organisations of all shapes and sizes all over the world and as a result there’s lots of support for it. There’s thousands of plugins to extend the functionality of WooCommerce.

You can sell anything

We’ve used WooCommerce to sell beer, telephone top-ups, clothes, wool, books, subscriptions, event tickets and much much more. WooCommerce doesn’t limit you to selling just physical products or very simple products. If you have something that you’re thinking of selling online, you’ll be able to sell it with WooCommerce.
